Marko Vovchok (the pen name of Maria Olexandrivna Vilinska, 1833–1907) is justifiably called the literary daughter of Taras Shevchenko. The writer's works played a leading role in the formation of Ukrainian realistic prose. She reaches the highest artistic level in depicting the tragic fate of a serf woman who suffered the biggest humiliation and lawlessness in the society of that time. The publication includes works written in Russian (the short story "Marusya"), as well as the folk tales "Father Andrew", "Instytutka" and "Maxim Grimach".
